Perth Road Runners - 25 Years Old

This page celebrates the forthcoming 25th anniversary of Perth Road Runners existence, in 2010.

The page will explain the history of the club from it's humble beginnings to the strong (but still friendly) club we have today. We will try to locate some pictures going back through the years - so beware... Throughout the year more information will be added to the page. Please keep checking back for updates.

History: Chapter 1

In 1985 a small number of joggers/ runners got together and decided to post an advert in a local newspaper. The plan was to invite local running enthusiasts to a meeting, with the intention of forming a social based running club.

Stemming from this a home was found, Perth Leisure Centre, and a friendly group of runners gathered there twice a week. The leisure centre was in the right location and the facilities were ideal, the venue being central and newly fitted out with a bar upstairs to unwind and socialise after training. This centre also had a dance studio, weight lifting hall and squash courts. For running it was a good base, giving access to many training roots. The black and green of the decor gave the club it's livery, but this facility was not to last, after a short life the centre was to close ( sold to the Hydro Board ) and the club had it's first dilemma.

A new base was found, Bell's Sports Centre, but many members felt that it was a move away from the social aspect of the club - it being a larger venue with no real meeting area therefore some members did not rejoin the club. It was felt we needed our own identity as the Strathtay Harriers also used this venue at the same time as us. In addition to this Perth experienced extreme floods which rendered Bells Sports Centre out of action, after only a couple of years we moved on again.

This time we were off to another fitness centre, the newly built Letham Centre. It had good changing facilities with a small cafe incorporated, but many runners felt with limited parking and access to running roots (due to its location at the west end of town) it wasn’t ideal. Not surprising that the membership numbers started to fall.
