A trio of Perth road runners members including Steve Ferguson, Simon Grieshaber and David Wood travelled to Camperdown Park, Dundee at the weekend to represent the club in the latest outing for the East District Cross Country Championships. Conditions on the day were bitterly cold, with a hard overnight frost leading to solid and icy underfoot conditions and some fast times. Steve Ferguson completed the course in 41.37 and was followed behind by Simon Grieshaber in 44.31. Whilst David Wood, in his second outing for the club since returning from injury clocked a time of 53.18.

The club will hold its annual winter run this coming Sunday the 15th of December with an outing to the Sma Glen, members are asked to meet at Bell Sports Centre car park for 08.30. Festive items of clothing are actively encouraged. The club recently held its annual ‘Lark in the Dark’ run in Deuchney woods above Perth on the night of Tuesday the 19th of November. The Lark in the Dark is an event with a twist. Runners are stripped of their high tech GPS running watches, and instead are instructed to arrive with head torches. The course is marked out, with runners only being told the route, and the distance when they arrive. The name of the game is to predict your likely finishing time. Distance on the night was 4.32 miles.

On Saturday the 23rd of November, club members David Wood and David Hunter kicked of their winter cross country seasons. David Wood returning with his first race back since injury took to the 8km course at Alloa for the first race in the East District Cross Country League and completed in a time of 49.33, David Hunter having made his return to Scotland following a spell in Australia which included some notable performances, clocked a time of 33.19 on the day.

This year’s Yahoo Club Handicap Race is due to take place on Tuesday the 17th of December. The race is open to all P R R members. The race distance is 9.5 miles To give the runners a guide to their start time, the aim is for everyone to finish around 8pm, so if you think your time will be 1hr 30min you will start at 6.30pm. Runners can be set off in 1 minute intervals, if you ran the Templeton Woods 10 mile race you can use that time as a guide. First runners can set off from 6 pm. Please turn up 10 – 15 min before your start time so you can get registered.

The Templeton 10 is an eagerly awaited fixture in the running calendar annually, and this year was no exception as a race which offered the chance to collect the final few points in the Perth Road Runners Club championship 2013. Held on the 3rd of November it attracted a number of PRR runners. Stuart Robertson was the first PRR vest across the line in a time of 69.25, with James Fotheringham just behind in a time of 71.28. Mark Leach posted a time of 71.46, whilst Simon Grieshaber completed in 75 minutes flat. Barry Campbell finished with another quick time of 76.58, and Nicola Crowe in 78.27. Bob Brown posted a time of 78.58, and Kenneth Stewart a time of 82.21. John Rudd completed in 82.45 ahead of sue Jones in 87.49 with Beth Gripton behind in 91.43. Lind O’Neil ran a time of 95.07 whilst Fiona Hair completed in a time of 95.39, whilst Sally Newton completed in a time of 1.46.25. Rhona McBean and Fiona Morrison completed in 1.50.03 and 1.56.18 respectively on what was a cold a blustery autumnal day.

 

The Glen Clova Half marathon hosted by Forfar Road Runners on Saturday the 9th of November, is renowned for its scenery and its challenging course, and has become one of the fastest selling races in Scotland, selling out in under 3 hours for 2013. Mark Leach was the first of PRRs runners to cross the line in a time of 1.35.52 and was followed in by Ewan Jelly in 1.40.25. Bob Brown posted a time of 1.43.23, whilst Peter Ritchie posted a time of 1.48.47 respectively.

 

Teams have also now been announced the 2013 Hartley Relays to be held on the Sunday the 17th of November at Forfar Loch Country Park. Members are also reminded of the clubs annual ‘Lark in the Dark’ to be held at Deuchney Woods on Tuesday the 19th of November, Full details are available on the club website, www.perthroadrunners.co.uk, where membership information can also be found.

Club members, Robin & Anne Wombill and Neil Muir ran the Glen Ogle race on Saturday 2nd November. The conditions started off cold and misty and then got worse as the day wore on with winds rain and then snow falling. Anne took the sensible decision and pulled out after 19 miles as the conditions took their toll. Robin soldiered on and ran a fantastic time 7 hours 32 minutes. Neil managed to escape the worst of the weather and despite tiring towards the end and held on to run 4 hours 13, placing 16th out of starting line up of 250. When this race opened for entries on the 1st

of July it sold out in an amazing 57 minutes!

Brian Cooper, Barry Campbell and Chris Paton were also putting their abilities to the test at the recent Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra Marathon. Conditions on the day were typically Scottish with all four seasons present throughout the day. Brian Cooper ran a strong second half after storming up the Eildon peaks to finish in a time of 7.24.Chris Paton ran alongside Barry Campbell who in astonishing year of running successes, marked the 1 year anniversary of his first ever half marathon, coincidentally also at Jedburgh, with his first ever ultra marathon, and finishing it with a sprint to clock a time of 8 hours 7 minutes.

Peter Ritchie clocked a further time of 4hrs 41min at the recent Snowdonia Marathon, this comes just weeks after completing Melbourne!

Mel MacRae also added another impressive time to her season at the recent Coigach Half Marathon, finishing in 1.56.44.

The club will host the now annual ‘Lark in the Dark’ race in Deuchney woods at 6.30pm on Tuesday the 19th of November. Participants should note: Head Torches are a must, watches are forbidden! The club is also looking for volunteers to help at the BUPA Great Winter run in Edinburgh.
