29.04.10 - PA Report
Perth Road Runners enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at the London Marathon, Balfron 10k and the Montagne Highland Fling Race and with a few personal bests being set at the same time!
Pete Ritchie was in action on Saturday at the Highland Fling race, a route which covers 53 miles and is part of the West Highland Way. Pete completed the gruelling event in 14hrs 39mins bringing his medal and t-shirt collection to 121.
13 of our members ran the London Marathon with some very impressive results. Mike Carroll was first PRR in 2hrs 22mins 52secs, Tony Jackson did 2:36:56, Linton Scarborough 2:53:47, Alex Munro 3:24:16, Grant Strachan 3:34:17, Grant Wooler 3:50:36, Stuart Wyllie 3:53:23, Fiona Hair 4:06:35, Tania Greenhorn and Nicola Lessells finished together in 4:25:04, Maureen Summers 4:32:54, Heather Yellowley 4:41:42 and Jean Wainwright 4:32:54. It’s worth noting that Mike finished just 3mins outside the qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games. It is also interesting that Jean, Maureen and Fiona finished 5th, 13th and 19th respectively in their age groups. Well done to everyone for those fantastic times, particularly those who were running their first marathon!
Closer to home, 3 of our members ran the Balfron 10k. The course was a lot hillier than our runners had expected with only about 400m of flat running! This didn’t stop Kevin Judge smashing his pb in a time of 39:09 and finishing 18th overall; Simon Grieshaber finished 41st in 42:30 and Debbie Jackson ran 53:49 and finished 268th out of 490 finishers.
Having tackled 3 marathons over the last 3 weeks, our runners will get a chance to let their hair down on Saturday at a club night out, the first proper night out this year for many of them. Enjoy the drinks guys, you’ve earned them!

23.04.10 - PA Report
It was another big race weekend for Perth Road Runners with a handful of our members heading north for the Lochaber Marathon and a couple running in the Sir Chris Hoy Half Marathon in Edinburgh.
The forecast was snow but our runners at Lochaber were greeted by a warm, sunny day! Greg Simpson overcame severe cramp at 25miles to finish first PRR home in 2hrs 52mins 5secs. Greg was disappointed with his time but aims to dust himself down and go for another marathon later in the year. Debbie Jackson finished in 4hrs 36mins 6secs, not a PB but faster than her last marathon. Anne Wombill did 4:20:24, Isobel Duncan 5:15, Fiona Morrison 5:19:28 and Elaine Ogg 5hrs 30secs. A special mention should be made to Anne, Fiona and Elaine who took 7mins, 17mins and 20mins off their PB’s respectively. Don’t know what you had to drink the night before but can you let us all know! Well done on a fantastic achievement girls!
Kevin Judge ran well in the Edinburgh Half Marathon, finishing in 1hr 29mins 19secs, followed by Phil Turner in 1:56:04.
This Sunday sees the last of the consecutive marathon weekends for our members but by no means the least, the London Marathon. A large number of our members have made their way down and we’ll be looking out for them and cheering them on tv. Good luck guys!

16.04.10 - PA Report
What a great weekend for Perth Road Runners at home and abroad! Sunday saw the club host the Heaven and Hell Half Marathon which had 196 finishers. The route, in glorious sunshine, winds its way over the hills beyond Murrayshall to Kilspindie and starts and finishes near Scone Airport. The race itself attracts runners from all over Scotland and the North of England due to its challenging hills. Tony Jackson was first PRR home in 1hr 17mins 30secs finishing in 2nd place, 1min behind the winner. Carl Duckworth was next in a fantastic time of 1:27:37, 9th overall. Colin McCreath finished in 1:45:16, Bob Brown 1:46:19, Kenneth Stewart 1:47:00, Edward Blum 2:06:59 and Phil Turner 2:13:23. The numbers of club runners are usually low as others work behind the scenes to help with Marshalling, Timing and also with the post-race hospitality that everyone enjoys!
On the same day, 7 of our members took part in the Paris Marathon. Again in glorious sunshine, our group joined the 30000+ runners heading down the Champs-Elysees and through the streets of the French capital, passing some famous landmarks and enjoying the variety of music and cheers from the large crowd lining the streets. Steven Bonthrone was first of the group home in 3hrs 25mins 36secs, Hugh Daly followed in 3:35:56, David Wood finished in 4:35:44 despite suffering cramp twice, Morag MacRae 5:31:05 and Jackie Daly in 5:59:36. Most inspiring were Allison McArthur and Pauline Mann who overcame injury and serious health problems to complete the race in 5:01:03 and 5:08:50 respectively. Fantastic results girls, you have inspired others more than you know!
This Sunday, more of our members will tackle the Lochaber Marathon. Good luck guys! Look out for their results next week. Happy Running

It was a quiet weekend race-wise for Perth Road Runners, however, our members have been putting in some vital training for the busy month of races ahead including 3 marathons of exciting locations and stunning scenery.
On Sunday, we have the Heaven and Hell Half Marathon, organised by the club. This is an increasingly popular race which attracts runners from all over the UK due to the challenging hilly route and also the post-race hospitality which keeps runners coming back every year. The route follows the roads beyond Scone Airport, Murrayshall, over the hill to Kilspindie and then back over again. Online entries are now closed for this but it is still possible to enter on the day. Race day entries are £15.
On the same day, a number of green vests will be visible at the Paris Marathon. The race represents different challenges for each of our members taking part and the euphoria of crossing the finishing line and receiving a medal will be the icing on the cake for the effort, determination and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome to get there. Hot on the heels, pardon the pun, of these two races will be the Lochaber and London Marathons.
Perth Road Runners encourage everyone to enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle and welcome those who enjoy running to come along and run better with the help of our enthusiastic members. If you enjoy running and would like to run with similar-minded people, why not come along and join in one of our training sessions? We meet at Bells at 6.30pm every Tuesday and there is always someone there to welcome you, keep you company on your run and introduce you to others who run at the same pace as you.

A number of green vests were spotted around the country at a number of races over the weekend. Marianne Crichton continued her great form with a 1hr 49mins 32secs at a very windy Wilmslow Half Marathon. Her partner Tom McLevy ran a terrific 1:50:28 in his first race for Perth Road Runners. Well done guys!
Next up was the Grangemouth 10k. The runners faced some cruel headwinds on a very windy day but that didn’t stop our hardened members from very respectable times. Simon Grieshaber was first PRR home in 43:01, followed by Robert MacDonald in 47:06, Scott Sharp in 48:00 and Joan Wilson in 49:24. Angela Park followed up her success in Errol last week with 2nd place in the Running Sisters 5k at Monikie on Sunday in a time of 21:22. She was followed home by her sister Vicky in 24:29, Andrea Finlay in 27:13 and Nicole Soave in 28:06.
With no major races this weekend, our members are shaping up for two big races next weekend. The popular but challenging Heaven and Hell Half Marathon, organised by the club, takes place in and around the roads near Scone Airport. With up to 250 runners set to take part, it’s sure to be a great event again. Entries are filling up fast so please check the club website for entry forms. Further afield, a number of club members will be tackling the Paris Marathon.

It was a hugely successful weekend of racing for Perth Road Runners at the Newtonmore 10mile, Alloa Half Marathon and the Errol 6k Fun Run with a few runners completing two of those races!
First up on Saturday was the Newtonmore 10 mile race which saw Tony Jackson win the men’s race, Marianne Crichton finish 3rd in her age group and to top it off great runs by Kevin Judge and Grant Strachan saw PRR win the team prize which is given to the club with the three fastest finishers.
Sunday saw a huge number of our green vests at the Alloa Half Marathon, the first race in the club’s championship series. The conditions were pretty good on a relatively flat course with a couple of challenging climbs including one just past the 10 mile mark. The headwind which greeted everyone at the top of that hill made sure we all had to work hard in the last bit of the race! Mike Carroll finished 3rd overall in a time of 1hr 8mins 14secs and was closely followed by Greg Simpson, Linton Scarborough and Mark Cooper. There was also an impressive run from Claire Douglas, the first PRR female home in 1:31:58 taking 14mins off her personal best. A number of other members also recorded pb’s, setting themselves up for a fast and successful year of running. Well done everyone!
Also on Sunday, and closer to home, was the Errol 6k Fun Run. Tony and Marianne followed up their exploits on Saturday along with Angela Park, Nicole Soave and Robert McDonald for this one. The course was a mix of trail and road with a good chunk of the race running through woods. Angela was first woman home with Tony Jackson finishing as second male.

19.03.10 - PA Report
It’s been a busy couple of weeks of racing for the road runners as they build up fitness ahead of the Championship season, prepare for forthcoming marathons or simply to measure their progress.
Last weekend saw a few members tackle the Highland Boundary Race series. The series involved three races, the first on Friday was an evening trail run of 4.5miles from The Hermitage to Birnam and saw Neil Muir finish 3rd overall in 23mins 3secs with Robert Thornton in 20th in 28:26. The second race on the Saturday was the 4mile/535m Birnam hill race. The first Road Runner home was Keri Weatherhogg, 2nd woman by 6secs and 6th place overall in a time of 41:27 followed by Neil Muir in 43:06. There were also good times from Meike Cooper, Angela Park, Helen MacLeod, Robin Wombill and Robert Thornton. The final race on the Sunday was an 11mile/800m climb at Deuchary Hill. Mark Cooper finished 4th overall in 1:05:09 followed closely by Ewan Taylor in 1:05:34. Neil Muir and Robert Thornton completed the series in very respectable times with Neil finishing 3rd in the series.
More recently, Helen MacLeod completed the world’s first Kilomathon in Nottingham in 2hrs 7mins 29secs. The race is 26.2km/16.3miles with events also planned in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Rhona McBean sharpened up her training with the Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon. Rhona finished in 1hr 42mins 16secs. Great time, Rhona!
This weekend sees the start of the club’s Championship with the Alloa Half Marathon on Sunday. There will also be sightings of the green army at the Newtonmore 10mile race on Saturday and also the Errol 6k Fun Run on Sunday. Good luck everyone!
You can join Perth’s friendly running club on Tuesday nights at Bells at 6.30pm.

Xmas Run 2009
A strong contingent of female Perth Road Runners paid their annual visit to Arbroath on Sunday for the Smokies 10mile race. The conditions were perfect for the slightly undulating course and resulted in a number of pb’s for the 14 from Perth. Fiona Angus was the first Road Runner home in 13th overall (lucky for Fiona!) in a time of 71mins 21secs. She was followed by Rhona McBean in 76:18 then Marianne Crichton in 82:49. Well done to everyone else on some really good times!
Linsey McArthur got her nomination early for the most far flung race for the Perth Road Runners green vest to be spotted at with her run at the Disney Half Marathon in Florida. Frost greeted the runners as they arrived for the race, unusual for a place dominated by the sun! Linsey completed the race, which included an uphill climb at 11 miles, in 2hrs 29mins, a pb for her. Well done!

A number of our runners are starting to get some race experience as part of their preparations for the big marathons in April and May. The next races up are in under 2 weeks with the Newtonmore 10mile race on the 20th and the Alloa Half Marathon on the 21st and I believe one road runner, Grant Strachan, is planning to do them both, such is the dedication of our members! The Alloa Half also signals the start of the club’s championship season and will bring the opportunity for those looking to challenge defending champions, Linton Scarborough and Keri Weatherhogg.
The Championship and Summer Series races are part of the fun of being a member of Perth Road Runners, a wonderful day’s running alongside some very enthusiastic and supportive people. Training night’s on Tuesday at 6.30pm at Bells.

05.03.10 - PA Report
It’s been a busy weekend for Perth Road Runners with a large number of green vests spotted at various events. First up was the Cupar 5 mile race which featured 9 of our members. The conditions weren’t favourable on the out-and-back course with runners facing a head wind on the way back. This didn’t stop Mike Carroll from crossing the line first in a time of 25mins 39secs, 50secs ahead of the second place runner. Greg Simpson finished 11th overall in a time of 28mins 8secs. There were also pb’s set by Simon Grieshaber, Grant Strachan and Angela Park.
Further afield, Mike Dales and Andrew Millington went back to their roots in East Yorkshire for the Snake Lane 10 mile race. They were accompanied by Fiona Manson who ran her first race south of the border. The race is one of the most popular events in the north of England, attracting 850 entries. This is possibly down to the picturesque setting of a route passing through the countryside and villages following through the twisting Snake Lane. Andrew Millington was the first of the trio home in an impressive 69mins 17secs, Mike followed in 76:31 and Fiona came home in 82:25. A few other members were thwarted when the conditions forced the latest race in the Monikie Duathlon series to be postponed.
This Sunday will see a number of our members take part in the Smokies 10mile race in Arbroath. This popular race is for women only. Good luck to everyone taking part!
If you would like to become part of the green army, please come along to our training nights every Tuesday at 6.30pm, meeting at Bells Sports Centre. Happy Running!
