26.02.10 - PA Report
While most Perth Road Runners are gearing up their training for the Championship season ahead or stepping things up for the April marathons, Marianne Crichton began her racing season at the Kirkintilloch 12.5km race on Sunday. A hilly race boasting a 408m ascent, enough to make the most ardent runner wince, didn’t faze Marianne who finished in a great time of 64mins 41seconds.
Lark in the Dark
The club are hosting their Lark in the Dark Handicap race on Tuesday 2nd March. This is a popular race, exclusive to the club members, as the fastest runner doesn’t always win. The requirement, apart from wearing a head torch, is that each runner predicts their finishing time over the route. The runners get a chance to study the map of the route before hand and it’s the one who finishes closest to their predicted time. Additionally, the runners are not allowed to wear a watch during the race. Meet at the Jubilee Car Park at 6.30pm.
Heaven & Hell
Entries are going well for the Heaven and Hell Half Marathon, organised by Perth Road Runners and we are now looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes on the day. This would be ideal for club members who aren’t going to be running and have some free time to help support a club event. If anyone’s interested, please contact Susie Lockett through the club website or at training sessions.
The Club Championship and Summer Series races have been finalised with one or two spare races awaiting confirmation. Please check the club website or the notice board at Bells for the updated list.
Happy Running!

19.02.10 - PA Report
Perth Road Runners held their Wee Winter Run on Sunday.
The conditions were just about ideal, not too hot and no wind and generally dry underfoot. It was a testing run of 4.75 miles which followed a route, marked by flour, along the tracks and trails above Moncrieffe and Friarton and ended with a helter skelter run down Buckie Braes. As always it attracted a small mixed field of road and off-road runners some of whom return every year. Euan Taylor was first home in 31:15 followed by Neil Muir in 32:36 and then Andrew Millington in 35:37. After the event most of the runners and marshals adjourned to the Cherrybank Inn for a well earned and excellent lunch.
The Wee Winter Run is one of a number of small events throughout the year organised by club members to give the members a fun challenge, a boost to their training and also a great opportunity to meet other people they don’t normally connect with on training runs. These runs enhance the spirit to which the club prides itself upon and keeps its runners motivated. For more details on these runs, please visit the club website or the notice board at Bells.
With a month away from the start of the club’s championship series, our runners are now stepping up their training with these races in mind and also forthcoming marathons. April will see a good number of green vests at glamorous places such as Paris on the 11th, Lochaber on the 18th and London on the 25th.
If you are running already and would like to improve with running as part of a big friendly group, come along to our training nights on Tuesdays at 6.30pm at Bells.

Happy Running!

12.02.10 - PA Report
An evening in the company of Graeme Obree at the club’s annual presentation dinner resulting in a late Saturday night didn’t stop a number of Perth Road Runners from racing on Sunday. Four runners made their way to Forfar for a multi-terrain half marathon.
It wasn't looking good when the freezing rain started only 30 minutes before the start. However the rain stopped in time and with a total lack of wind the weather conditions were perfect.
The real challenges were in the middle of the race where the freezing water was 2 feet deep for 2 to 300 metres. The organisers had kindly cleared the ice out of the way before the race started! It's very difficult to run when your feet are numb and incredibly the leading male and female winners both set new course records. However the toughest part of the race comes after 9 miles of flat running when the competitors tackle the 175 metre high ascent of Balmashanner Hill. The good news is that they then have to run down the other side. The grins on the faces of the Perth quartet at the end of the race spoke for themselves, no silverware to bring home but a brilliant days running.Pete Ritchie finished in 108 minutes, Robin Wombill in 120 minutes, Bob Thornton in 130 minutes and Phil Turner in 134 minutes.
Meanwhile, 6 more runners went to Monikie for the next stage of the Duathlon series. Despite the cold, Erni Hamilton finished in 1 hr 19.35, Alec Morrison 1hr 23.04, Jimmy King 1hr 28.23, Ken Laidlaw 1hr 33.54 with Elaine Laidlaw and Julie King demonstrating their true friendship by crossing the line together in 1hr 40.20.
The Wee Winter Run takes place on Sunday, please check the website or Bells for more details.

05.02.10 - PA Report
With marathon training occupying a lot of the Road Runners minds just now, 2 of our members took part in races over the weekend. First up was Pete Ritchie at the Lumphanan 10k. The course was mostly on road but 2km was on a track, made tricky due to the snow. Pete ran a very respectable 49:44 given that the winning time of over 38mins was 7mins slower than the course record. Even MacBeth would have found this race quite a challenge during his time spent there!
Jake Carter took on the appropriately named Tough Guy Challenge in Wolverhampton on Sunday. This is no ordinary event and certainly not for the faint-hearted! Jake took 3hrs and 8mins to complete the 8 mile cross country/assault course with freezing cold water events, obstacles up to 20m high and, not to forget, an electric fence obstacle to tackle. Very impressive and Jake is now well equipped to tackle any race that the rest of us will no doubt grumble at throughout the year!
The members have the opportunity to let their hair down this Saturday at the club’s presentation dinner. Those who have excelled in the Championship, the Summer Series and other outstanding performers will be presented with their awards by cycling legend, Graeme Obree.
The club are always looking to attract new members so if you can run at least 6 miles and would like to run with other similar minded people then we would like to welcome you to the club. The club meets every Tuesday at 6.30pm at Bells. Thursday nights are alternated between hill and track sessions. We recommend coming along on Tuesdays then find out more about our Thursday sessions.
Happy Running!

29.01.10 - PA Report
A few of our runners managed to get some racing at the weekend at the Devil’s Burden in Fife. It is a relay race over 31km consisting of 4 legs for teams of 6 (2 legs run in parts). The race starts and finishes in Falkland and is run over the Lomond Hills. The race consists of 3 hill legs and one trail leg.
117 teams of 6 took part so there were 2 starts - a 9.30 am start for slower teams and 10.00am start for the majority. Conditions were good - light rain with underfoot conditions muddy with snow in places. Visibility was good so navigation was not a problem.
One Perth team entered consisting of Meike Cooper and Colin Wilson - Leg 1, Joan Wilson - Leg 2, Mark Cooper and Keri Weatherhogg - Leg 3 and Neil Muir - Leg 4. The finishing time was 3:09:50 - third mixed team overall. Grant Wooler and Claire Douglas also took part in Kinnoull Hill Runners’ team, they were in the 9.30 am start and finished in 3:51:42. Homemade soup greeted all runners in Falkland village hall after the race. This is one of the best things about taking part in the smaller, local races – the post race hospitality so if you’re looking to take part in some races this year, look out for the smaller events as they can sometimes be far better than the big city ones.
Saturday 6th February is the date for the club’s Annual Presentation night at the Lovat Hotel where former World Champion and World Record holder, Graeme Obree will be the guest speaker. If club members have still to order tickets then please contact the committee. Tickets are £20

22.01.10 - PA Report
While the January weather has disrupted many sporting events, it hasn’t dampened the spirits of the Perth Road Runners. A few missed out as the latest race in the Monikie Duathlon series was understandably postponed but many others have braved the elements to continue their training. The numbers returning to the club’s training sessions have increased as have the numbers joining up with the marathon training sessions on Sunday mornings. The conditions are certainly not perfect as many of the roads are still quite icy but everyone’s still determined to get the miles in.
Plans are going well for the popular Heaven and Hell Half Marathon in April but the club are looking for volunteers to help with marshalling on the day. If anyone is interested, please speak to Race Organiser Susie Lockett or any other committee member.
The 2010 Club Championship will get under way on the 21st March with the Alloa Half Marathon and the Summer Series will start in April with the Kinross High 10k race. The line up of races is available on the club’s notice board at Bells and the PRR website. Dates have still to be confirmed for many of the races.
If you can run 6miles then Perth Road Runners would like to hear from you. We are known as “the friendly club” due to the encouragement and support we provide to all of our members. We meet every Tuesday at 6.30pm at Bells for a training run and our Thursday 6.30pm sessions are split between track workouts and hill work. Whatever pace you run at, there are plenty of people who will run with you and help you progress your running.
Happy running!

15.01.10 - PA Report
There was no race action at the weekend but a group of club members braved the wintry conditions to marshall at the International Cross Country/Great Winter Run event in Edinburgh on Saturday. This is one of a number of events that Perth Road Runners lends support to throughout the year. 17 members provided course assistance in the Cross Country races which saw a number of Olympic and World Champions compete against the best and brightest prospects of British Athletics. A good day was had by all and the nice hot cup of tea at the end helped everyone thaw out a bit!
Training continues for those running marathons in the Spring. A number of runners go out every Sunday morning with varying distances being covered. If anyone would like to join in, come along to Bells at 9am on Sunday.
The club’s training runs continue on Tuesday nights with routes carefully selected to avoid the icy paths. Thursday’s track/hill runs are still in doubt and may be changed to a normal training run, leaving from Bells. For more information on the Thursday runs, as well as other PRR news, visit the club’s website or look at the notice board at Bells Sports Centre.
Happy Running!

Xmas Run 2009
An impressive 16 PRR members braved the conditions and headed to Blairgowrie for the New Year’s Day Fun Run. The conditions were a lot better than anticipated and turned out to be perfect running weather – cool but dry with no wind. The girls did very well with Rhona McBean coming first and Marianne Crichton finishing second in the 3.7 mile race. Congratulations Rhona on your first win!
The club’s training runs have restarted after the festive period so if you are interested in joining Perth’s friendly running club, meet at Bells around 6.20pm for a 6.30pm start every Tuesday. Our experienced runners will select a route that’s suitable for everyone to run on and there will always be someone who runs at the same pace to keep you going. Please note that our Thursday track/hill sessions are subject to change due to the weather conditions so please check our notice board at Bells for more details.
Training has started for those members participating in marathons in the spring. If you’ve got an entry for a marathon and would like to train with a group, come and meet us at Bells every Sunday at 9am. If you would like a challenge this year, try the club’s Heaven and Hell Half Marathon. This is an increasingly popular event that offers participants a test with a combination of climbs, flat and a great downhill bit towards the end! Entries are now open with full details on the club’s website and online entries are available at www.born2run.co.uk
2010 marks Perth Road Runners’ 25th Birthday. A number of events are planned for the year to celebrate so watch this space for further details.
