30.10.09 - PA Report
Most of the roadrunners had a well-earned rest from competition last weekend. They are saving themselves for the last race of the championship – the Templeton 10 this coming weekend. It is a notoriously hilly race covering 10 miles over country roads on the outskirts of Dundee. Points earned from this race will determine the final standings in the 2009 championship. Therefore several mini duels will be taking place amongst the runners, as every point counts. The winners will be presented with their awards at the annual prize giving dinner in February.
Robin Wombill did not like the idea of resting up while holidaying down south. He took the opportunity to enter one of the national Park Runs in Hove near Brighton. These are free 5K races held on Saturdays in parks up and down the country. The following day Robin returned to his hometown and ran the Croydon 10K in a PB of 48:21. The day was made extra special for Robin when Donna Fraser, a Croydon Harriers star, who represented the UK at 400m in four Olympic Games, presented him his medal.
Robin did not rest on his laurels; he finished his holiday with Banstead Woods Park Run. This is an off road route and one of the toughest Park Run courses. Robin finished 2nd male in the 55-59 category – an impressive set of results in just 10 days.

Autumn was in full colour in the Highlands last weekend when over 30 Perth Roadrunners took part in the Aviemore Half Marathon. Over a thousand runners participated in this charity event which raises money for the Badaguish Outdoor Centre for children with disabilities.
The route is over a mixture of forest track and cycle path. Competitors start from the outdoor centre then run around Loch Morlich and finish in the centre of Aviemore. The sun was shining for most of the race with a bit of rain dampening the competitors at the finish line. Competitors were treated to some amazing scenery with the yellows and reds of the trees adding to the mountainous backdrop.
Mark Cooper enjoyed a successful day finishing only a fraction ahead of team mate Linton Scarborough with both men recording the same time of 1:19:12. This was a PB for both Mark and Linton. They were placed 7th and 8th overall with Mark collecting the 2nd male vet prize. New member Ewan Taylor made an excellent start to his club running finishing in 1:23:56 in his first half marathon.
In the ladies Keri Weatherhogg finished 5th in 1:28:51. Erni Hamilton was next in 1:32:45 winning the third female vet prize. Meike Cooper continued her good form this year crossing the line just behind Erni in 1:32:52. Vicky Park had a great run and achieved a PB of 1:52:35. This is Vicky’s third PB of the year and she has now improved her 10K, 10M and half marathon times.

Hundreds of athletes of all ages and capabilities came together on Perth’s North Inch last Saturday to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Conditions were good if a little chilly as the participants completed the 5K Big Fun Run, a major charity event happening at venues across the country. Many Perth Roadrunners were marshalling at the event and their help was invaluable for making the event a success. A few were participating themselves including Grant Wooler, Robin Wombill, Marianne Crichton and Debbie Jackson.
The Giffordtown 5K race also took place last weekend with four roadrunners making the trip to Fife for this popular race. It was a fine autumnal day for the, flat out-and-back course beginning and ending at the Village Hall in Giffordtown. Runners faced a slight headwind on the way out, but reaped the benefits of a tailwind coming back with most people running the second half of the race quicker than the first. Mark Cooper was 5th overall and 1st male vet in 17:10 only 5 seconds outside the course record for his category. Bill Lawson who is recovering from injury finished in 20:29. Robert MacDonald was next in 22:29 then Bob Thornton in 23:06.
Hill racing is becoming popular with some club members. The Newtyle Hill Race took place recently. This was a small but sociable event with 22 runners completing the 7.5K race including 280m of ascent. Three Perth roadrunners took part – Mike Dales, Robert Thornton and Fiona Manson who was third lady. The Perth trio also won the team prize.
Meike Cooper and Keri Weatherhogg ventured down to Peebles for the Manor Water Hill Race. Conditions were good underfoot and the sun broke through at times. The race involved 15.2K over heather and narrow paths with 670m of climbing and some spectacular views from the top. Over eighty runners took part with Keri Weatherhogg finishing third female in 1:29:32 and Meike Cooper 6th in 1:37:26.
This weekend there will be a mass exodus up the A9 as many club members will travel north for the popular Aviemore Half Marathon.

The 2009 Great Scottish Run took place in Glasgow last weekend. Scotland's greatest race consisted of Half Marathon and 10k race distances to suit all levels and abilities. The unprecedented numbers taking part meant particular sections were very crowded however the support along the route was excellent.
Five Roadrunners ventured west to take part in this popular event. David Hunter had an excellent run with a personal best of 1:25:39. Kevin Judge finished next in 1:34:31 with Hugh Daly following in 1:37:55.
In the ladies Debbie Jackson was in good form and finished in 1:54:45 and new member Nicola Lessells ran an impressive 1:58:29.
Robert MacDonald ran the Self-Transcendence 5k race last week on the Meadows in Edinburgh. This is a well-established summer race series that takes place over 3 laps of a flat accurately measured one-mile loop. Robert ran well and finished in a time of 22:22.
Robin Livingstone completed the Gallovidian Dumfries 10k Road Race last week in a time of 40:58 continuing his recent good form.
Further afield Colin and Joan Wilson completed the Ben Nevis Race that involves running up and down Britain’s highest mountain of 4406 feet. Most people have never walked up this mountain let alone run. Colin and Joan clocked admirable times of 2:27:50 and 2:32:41 respectively.

Last Sunday saw the inaugural run of what we hope will become an annual event – the Strathtay Harriers / Perth Roadrunners Challenge. This was an opportunity for the Roadrunners to try their hand at some proper track and field athletics and proved to be great fun.
With youth and natural talent on their side – it was always going to be the Harrier’s day, however the competitive spirit of the Roadrunners was very much in evidence with some respectable performances from Robert MacDonald in the 100 and 200 metre sprints. Mark Cooper was impressive in virtually every event but especially the Javelin. Fiona Angus risked ridicule on the track from her Harrier daughter but was able to hold her own against the youngsters. Other Roadrunner performances of note included: Elaine Laidlaw in both Javelin and Long Jump and Simon Grieshaber in the Javelin – Simon’s Harrier daughter also excelled on the track.
Over 250 runners took part in the Perth 10k race at the weekend. The new course for 2009 was a great success with plenty of positive feedback coming from the participants. The rain stayed off making conditions pleasant for competitors and spectators alike.
Starting at the George Duncan track, the runners completed 2 laps of the athletics track before heading to the North Inch for 2 laps then returning back to the track.
Perth’s Mike Carroll was close to his best form setting a new course record of 31:02. Next locals home were Greg Simpson and Tony Jackson finishing fourth and fifth respectively. They were neck and neck until the final 200m when Greg’s sprinting skills saw him beat his team mate by 1 second in a dramatic finish. This was a personal best for Greg in 34:17.
The roadrunners kept the silverware in Perth with Keri Weatherhogg winning the ladies race in 39:52. Meike Cooper ran a great race and achieved a personal best of finishing 3rd in the ladies in 41:17. Fiona Angus was third female vet and also ran a personal best of 43:01.
Several other road runners achieved personal bests including Linton Scarborough in 35:31, Pete Ritchie in 43:16, Hugh Daley in 43:23 and Vicki Park in 49:53.
This was the seventh and last race of the summer series and this year’s winners were Tony Jackson and Angela Park. Linton Scarborough finished second and Pete Ritchie third in the men’s series. Vicki Park was second and Debbie Jackson third in the female series.
Thanks go to Bob Ellis and his team and members of Perth Roadrunners who helped organise the event to make it the success it was.
