Last week saw 27 runners take part in the club’s Target Zero race in Quarry Mill woods. The race took place on a sunny evening and consisted of 2 laps over a trail and tarmac course. It was a sociable evening with the emphasis on fun rather than racing.
This year predicted times matched very accurately to actual times with 14 people running within a minute of their predicted time.
Robert MacDonald won, running just 3 seconds outside his predicted time. Second was Paul Grace who was 7 seconds out and Dave Norrie was third- out by 15 seconds.
2009’s Tour of Fife took place last week with nearly 200 competitors completing a series of 5 races held over mixed terrain on 5 consecutive days. Times and finishing positions were recorded at each race and added together to determine the overall series winners.
It reached its conclusion on Sunday afternoon at the 3.7 mile Arso Vertitus Trail Race by Falkland and very well done to our 7 “tourists” who completed the gruelling 5 days of racing.

It was perfect conditions for runners in Ballater last weekend but not so great for spectators. Drizzling rain kept everyone cool over the ten-mile course, which included some tough hills and muddy tracks.
Once again Perth was well represented with 26 runners making the journey north. The roadrunners had a successful day with the ladies team of Keri Weatherhogg, Meike Cooper and Fiona Angus winning the ladies team prize.

Robert Thornton had the best of the weather at the weekend enjoying warm sunshine for the Scolty Hill Race in Banchory. This race forms part of the Banchory Show and is set over 4.5 miles with 900 feet of climbing. Robert finished 13th in this race in the same position and time he ran the Balmashanner Hill Race a few days before.

It’s been a quiet week for the roadrunners after the hectic race schedule of the last few weeks.
This weekend is the 4th race of the championship and takes place in Ballater. It is a ten mile circuit set in stunning Royal Deeside on a mixture of road and track crossing seven bridges over the Dee. There is sure to be a big turnout from the club, as points from this race will count towards the highly competitive club championship.
On a local level, Target Zero is on Thursday 30th July at 6.30. The meeting place is the car park on the Scone side of Quarry Mill. This is a fun run for club members where the idea is to predict the time it will take to run a route that is to be unveiled on the night. Competitors completing the distance in a longer or shorter period will have the time expressed as a positive or minus from their prediction, expressed as zero. The closest to Zero wins. Everybody has a chance! Strict rules will apply -no watches or timing devices are to be carried by runners.
For those runners with a cycling interest, the annual club duathlon is on the 6th August. This is a popular event as many members cycle for fitness and leisure. The distances are 4.2 miles run and 12.4 miles cycle. The event is held at Pitcairngreen offering a challenging but quiet route.

The roadrunners came up trumps again for the post race teas with a great display of home baking and sandwiches for the hungry competitors.
Three teams of Perth runners took part in the Corrieyairach Challenge last weekend. This event raises money for the Speyside Trust Badaguish Centre that provides outdoor activity holidays and respite care for people with special needs.
The sponsored challenge consists of a 17-mile hill section over the historic Corrieyairack mountain pass (2350ft) followed by a 26-mile road section. Runners, bikers, duathletes and walkers of all levels take part so consequently there is great camaraderie and mix between 'elites' and 'have a go's'.
All three Perth teams competed in the run/ cycle event and most found it a gruelling challenge in the hot and sunny conditions. Mark Cooper finished in an impressive 3:42:12 and was 10th overall. Keri Weatherhogg was 4th female in a time of 4:02:40. Andrew Millington pipped Meike Cooper to the post - their respective times were 4:15:40 and 4:15:46. Meike was 6th female. 03.07.09 - PA Report
34 Perth runners featured in this year’s Milnathort Dash. It was held on a cool summer’s evening with a light breeze – ideal conditions for running. This 5.5mile race starts with a long slog up hill with the first female and male to the top receiving “the queen/king of the hill title”. Only Grant Wooler decided to go for it and he reached the top in second place. The rest of the Perth runners decided to pace themselves over this undulating course.
Tony Jackson continued his recent form and came third overall in a time of 29:59. Linton Scarborough was next over the line in 32:05 followed by Alan Burns in 32:16.
Meike Cooper led the ladies home in 36:13 finishing 4th female overall. Fiona Angus was second Perth lady home in 37:46 followed by Amy Greig in 39:15.
Perth Roadrunners Bob Brown and Fiona Hair picked up first prize for first male and first female over 60 in their respective times of 36:37 and 44:20.
Further afield in Ellon, Fiona Manson and Robin Wombill competed in the Ythan Challenge. This is a 10k race with a difference. The middle section includes various obstacles to tackle - climbing over hay bales, crawling under cargo nets and a mud pit! There is also a 400-metre section of wading along the river Ythan and three very steep scrambling hills. The last one was after the river so the faster runners were at an advantage before it got too wet.
Robin and Fiona ran together finishing in a time of 67:41. The race is well organised and makes for a great day out with a post race BBQ.
Next on the calendar is the 4.5 mile Newburgh Race on Wednesday 8th July.
