With no club championship races being run last weekend various members went off and 'did there own thing'. Saturday saw a very hardy group tackle the Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon which was the Scottish Middle Distance Championship. The first leg was a 1.9k swim in Loch Tay, then a 90k cycle ride up Schiehallion road, round Loch Rannoch and back to Aberfeldy and finally a 21k road race to Strathtay and back. Julie King and Elaine Laidlaw were part of a team with their friend Jules Morrison but it was a very chuffed pair of Mark Cooper, total time 4.53.21 and 14th place overall who got a male vet silver and Erni Hamilton 5.36.01 who got a female vet gold.
On Sunday 11 members drove north to Forfar for their annual 10k road race. 274 runners enjoyed a slightly undulating but fast and scenic course. The race was sewn up in 32.35 by David Simpson of Carnegie Harriers with the first three male Perth Road Runners being Bill Lawson, Grant Wooler and David Norrie. Angela Park was first home for the Perth ladies followed by Veronica Muir and Fiona Morrison. Results were, Bill Lawson 42:34, Grant Wooler 43:35, David Norrie 43:43, Scott Sharp 44:12, Simon Grieshaber 45.02, Robert Thornton 45:28, Angela Park 45:45, Bob Brown 46.00, Peter Ritchie 46.36, Veronica Muir 71.38, Fiona Morrison 75.01
The next club championship race will be the newly revamped Perth 10k on August 31st at 1pm over the new for 2008 course.

With many Perth Road Runners cycling for leisure and fitness the annual club duathlon held at Pitcairngreen is a popular event. The event involves a one lap 4.2 miles run and then a three lap12.4 miles cycle. At the end of the run Linton Scarborough was 8 seconds ahead of Mark Cooper but Mark took it back, and lots more, once in the saddle to not only win the event but also to knock almost 2 minutes off the old course record that he set last year. His finishing total time was 58:10 with an ever fit Derek Phillips in second place and Linton coming home third. For the ladies Erni Hamilton was uncatchable in both disciplines to finish fourth overall in 68:15 and again breaking the course record she also set last year by 19 seconds. Fiona Angus was the second lady home.
Last Saturday saw 6 male and 6 female members take part in a special invitation 4 mile race as part of a day of events at Perth’s fine George Duncan Memorial Track. The club were running against teams from other local clubs. Following a tribute for George Duncan the race started and took a route across to the Tay, along the river to go anti-clockwise around the North Inch and back again to the track. Despite the wet conditions Linton Scarborough came first and Derek Phillips was third with Keri Weatherhogg the winning female in fourth place.
On Sunday Scott Sharp travelled to North Queensferry for the annual Forth Bridge 10k road race where he finished 77th out of 310 in 45.11.
Also on Sunday 6 club members went over to Mull for their annual Half Marathon. The runners all got soaked before the start but the rain soon cleared and they enjoyed some sunny spells. Paul Arcari of Kilbarchan AAC won the event from Robert Gilroy of Ronhill Cambuslang with Neil Muir first PRR home in 6th place and 1:20:30. Bill Lawson 1:33:51 was second PRR home with Peter Ritchie having a brilliant run to overtake Kenneth Stewart at the 11 mile mark and beat him home by 15 seconds in 1:36:48. Not far behind Kenneth was Bob Brown in 1:39:44 thereby ensuring that all the Perth runners completed the 13.1 miles in under 100 minutes. Wilma Davidson of Dundee Road Runners won the 10k walk beating PRR Veronica Muir into second place despite Veronica taking nearly 6 minutes off her 2007 winning time.

Being in a canoe without a paddle could so easily have described Perth Road Runners handicap race as runners were required to remove all watches prior to the start of the event.
Race organiser, Karen Walters produced an accurately measured 4.9-mile course taking runners along the woodland paths of Kinnoull Hill before a final descent to the finish line within the beautifully landscaped gardens of fellow club member, Jean Wainwright. With runners providing an estimated time for the distance it was Jake Carter who recorded the “best time” of 7 seconds within his prediction, closely followed by Steve Bonthron (-12 seconds). The women apparently lost all track of time, as it was left to Linda O’Neill to provide their best effort, finishing fourth overall (-34 seconds). Despite the deluge of rain all 20 runners successfully negotiated the route.
Missing on the night was Angela Park who had ventured into the Kingdom of Fife for 5 races over five consecutive days as part of the 8th annual Tour of Fife challenge. Starting with a 5-mile road race Angela secured a mid table position from a field of 150 (7th F) before completing the series with the forest race and dropping to 14th (F) position.
This Saturday, invited club members will participate at the George Duncan Athletics Arena as part of the Testimonial to the former Scottish Athletics official and member of Strathtay Harriers. The day opens with a senior 4-mile road race at 9:50am followed by track and field events for junior teams.
The club is now recruiting runners for the North Inch Ultra Festival organised by Scottish Athletics on 13th/14th September. In particular, the Mixed Team Relay starting at 8pm on Saturday and finishing the following morning has attracted strong interest from members with 2 teams of 6 runners already lined up for the 12-hour event. Further details may be obtained from Kenneth Stewart.

Hopefully it won’t adversely affect the weather but the summer is now finished – well for the Perth Road Runners their Summer Series is! The competition is a series of short, mostly evening, local races held each summer. This year the series comprised six races with two races each in May, June and July. In a short fiercely contested male series it’s a known fact that if you miss one race you won’t win. This proved to be the case for the men with 25 points for a win and only 10 points separating the top three runners after four races. Linton Scarborough missing the final round at the Crieff 10k, on his present form, cost him the title and he claimed the runner up spot. David Norrie missed the penultimate round at the Newburgh 4.5 mile race but managed third place. The honours for 2008 go to Bill Lawson who completed all the races and it makes up for last year when he would’ve won if he hadn’t ironically missed the Crieff 10k. Meanwhile in the ladies series, in her first full season with the club, Angela Park broke the rules, she was in such dominant form that she won the series despite missing a race. Fiona Morrison’s consistency was rewarded with second place six points behind Angela and only one point ahead of third placed Fiona Manson who also missed a race.
The fourth race in the Perth Road Runners 2008 club championship took place last weekend. Twenty two members made the trip up to Ballater for the Deeside Runners organised annual 10 mile road race. The weather was hot but there was a refreshing breeze at some points on the undulating course, which was generally run on quiet country lanes, apart from a mile section along a trail beside the river Dee. This was immediately contrasted by the next mile which was along the side of the busy A93!
The club performed well with Neil Muir 1:03:27 coming home 6th overall and first male vet. Keri Weatherhogg 1:08:18 was 3rd female and first Perth lady home. Erni Hamilton 1:12:19 was 3rd female vet and Bob Brown 1.17.21 was 2nd over 60 male.
The next event for the club is the annual club duathlon on Thursday 7th August. Meet at Pitcairngreen at 18:45 for a 19:00 start.

The next events for the club are the fourth round of the Club Championship at the Ballater 10 mile road race this coming Sunday 27th July starting at noon in the park next to the primary school. Then on Thursday 31st July it’s the annual Club Handicap, meet at 6:45pm outside Jean Wainwright’s house (opposite the main entrance to Murray Royal).
The route’s a secret but you’re told the distance and you have to make a time estimate. Your watches are then taken away and you’re told the route. The runner closest to their estimate is the winner.

The first weekend of July saw 3 members of Perth Road Runners take up the Corrieyairack Challenge. This involves a 17-mile run over the 18thC military road from Fort Augustus to Garva Bridge followed by a 26 mile cycle to Kincraig. Hero of the day was Robin Wombill who, on the eve of the race, gallantly stepped forward to replace an injured team member. Undaunted by the task, Robin completed the course in 5hrs 38mins. Fiona Manson, who managed to overtake Robin during the transition from run to cycle, completed the distance in 5hrs 24mins. Also braving the strong head wind was third team member Karen Walters, finishing in 5hrs 52mins.
The following day Neil Muir was the sole PRR representative to participate in the Stonehaven Half Marathon. Despite the warm conditions, Neil secured a creditable eighth position from a field of 200.
The next port of call for the club came mid week when a dozen members travelled down the Tay to Newburgh and joined 120 other runners for a short 4-mile sprint along farm tracks and fields. In form Linton Scarborough kept pace with the leading group to gain sixth spot in 27mins:02secs. Other club finishers included: Stephen Ferguson 29:14; William Lawson 31:35; Scott Sharp 33:08; Angela Park 33:09; David Norrie 33:19; Robert McDonald 33:49; Danny Ternent 33:51; Fiona Manson 36:06; Alex Gillies 43:26; Karen Neil 43:26; Fiona Morrison 46:13.
Organisers of the Crieff 10K produced a multi-terrain event as runners negotiated the wooded slopes of Laggan Hill, before returning along the banks of the River Earn via Lady Mary’s Walk. Leaving all in his wake, Robert Gilroy of Cambuslang repeated his 2006 and 2007 victories by establishing a new course record of 33 minutes and 22 seconds.
PRR Results – Derek Phillips 40:11; Stephen Ferguson 41:29; William Lawson 45:13; David Norrie 46:44; Kenneth Stewart 46:55; Danny Ternent 47:19; Fiona Angus 47:41; Scott Sharp 47:53; Angela Park 48:56; Robert Thornton 51:34; Peter Ritchie 53:50; Linda O’Neill 55:17; Karen Walters 59:28; Fiona Morrison 68:45.
Finally, congratulations to Jean Wainwright for the lone trek north to Elgin where she contested an extremely undulating 10-mile road race and was awarded with 3rd super vet prize.

The race roundup for the Perth Road Runners this week reads like the side of an exotic version of Del Boy Trotters Reliant van, with members competing at events in Norway, Nice and – Bridge of Earn.
The tour of Europe events commenced at the Midnight Sun half marathon in Tromso Norway where the sun doesn’t set from the middle of May until the middle of July. The race started at 10:30 pm and Dorothy Bates, running against runners from all over the world, completed the course in 2:30:15.
Then it was off to a very hot and very sunny Nice where Erni Hamilton competed in the ultimate triathlon event at the 4th French Ironman where she completed a 2.4mile swim in 1:18:24, a 112 mile bike ride in 6:26:10 and finally a 26.2 mile marathon run in 3:53:47.
Finishing 5th in the over 40 female class in a total time of 11h 52m 01s.
Finally it was off to Bridge of Earn for one of the clubs two main annual events, the 5 mile Brig Bash road race. Now in its 11th year it attracted a large entry of over 180 runners of all ages and abilities. The weather, while perfect for the spectators, was a bit hot and humid for the runners. Heavy showers before the start, which could have eased things, avoided the town and followed the Ochils towards Auchterarder instead. The race started at the Institute and followed a gently undulating route around quiet backroads to finish back at the start point. An aspect that the club has become rather famous for is its post race spread of food which is provided by the Perth Road Runners members. Between the end of the race and the prize giving a huge amount of food was totally demolished by the attendant horde. This either means that it was a really good spread – or running makes you hungry! As well as supplying the race, the marshals and the food the club also supplied 22 of the runners. While Carnegie Harriers took the top two places Mark Cooper 28:39 in 8th overall, Linton Scarborough 28:55 and Derek Phillips 29:44 were the first three male Road Runners home and Angela Park 35:16 in 92nd place, Susan Smith 40:18 and Linda O’Neill 40:28 the first three female Road Runners home. Special mention must go to member Dougie Hooper who finished the race in 51:00. He wasn’t last and he averaged 10:12 per mile, not fast you might think – but Dougies pretty speedy compared to other 80 year olds!
