- Wainright has a goodtime in the festive season |
| With Christmas almost upon us,
the majority of members seem to have forsaken pounding
the roads in favour of alternative seasonal activities
such as the dreaded Christmas shopping.
The one exception to this, is Jean Wainwright,
who headed north at the weekend, to the Moray
Firth, to compete in the Lossiemouth Turkey Trot,
where she recorded a highly creditable time of
1 hr 39.27.
As an antidote to the future festivities, members
are reminded that the Blairgowrie fun run takes
place on New Year’s day. A nice,short 3.8
mile run through the streets of Blair could be
just the thing to overcome any Hogmanay hangovers.
In the meantime, enjoy the festivities , and
a Merry Christmas to everyone.

- Road Runners AGM |
| There was a healthy turnout for
the club’s A.G.M. Which was held on Monday
4th December at Bell’s Sports Centre.
The club was in a healthy state financially,
with a surplus of income over expenditure during
the last year. Membership of the club currently
stood at 80.
It was decided to change the club colours back
to the original green, white and black. This will
be phased in, so members can continue to wear
their existing green and white.
Club champions were confirmed as Tony Jackson
and Clare Frulloni. Members’ votes for most
improved male and female runner of the year, went
to Tony Jackson, whose performances included an
excellent debut marathon at Edinburgh, and a win
in the Oban half marathon, and to Debbie Jackson
for a string of fine performances during which
she improved her personal best times on several
occasions.
Colin Keough was named as the outstanding club
personality of the year for his hard work and
commitment in his coaching role.
The club’s Yahoo race will take place on
Thursday 21 at Bell’s, with a 6.30 start.

- Runners have a muddy good time |
Mud, mud, glorious mud was the
battle cry on Sunday as 13 members from Perth Road
Runners contested the East District League cross-country
meeting at Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy. Even the imposing
15th century ruin of Balwearie Castle was no distraction
for runners, as they came to terms with the challenging
course spread over woodland trails, and open fields.
The penultimate race of the day was the senior women’s
6.4km event with the first 3 runners to count from
each team. First over the line, with an impressive
run for the club, was Joan Wilson in 32mins 53secs
followed by Elaine MacLennan (35:53), making her
first cross-country appearance. After an injury
lay-off, Arabella Woodrow (37:12) made a welcome
return to competition, pursued by another debutant,
Debbie Jackson (38:11).
The closing event of the afternoon saw 250 senior
men embark upon the toughest race of the meeting
over a gruelling 8.8km circuit. Requiring six finishers
for a team placing, Perth enjoyed the luxury of
having 9 runners, but with David Knight placed 27th
in 33mins 45secs it became a tussle between Martin
Ryan (37:59), Neil Muir (38:04) and Derek Phillips
(38:07) for second spot. Stephen Ferguson (40:03)
and Colin Wilson (42:35) completed the team (15th
position) with Bill Lawson (44:20), David Norrie
(44:31) and Kenneth Stewart (45:11) in reserve.
Further north, Hugh Daly ran the Fraserburgh Half
Marathon in 1:39:08
Finally, Perth Road Runners hold their AGM on Monday
at Bell’s Sports Centre starting at 7pm. |

- Gauldry Gallop |
The attraction of hot soup followed
by high tea at the village hall was just the incentive
needed to attract Perth Road Runners to the long
established Gauldry Gallop last Saturday. With “tattie
howkin” over for another year, a record entry
of 170 cross-country enthusiasts made best use of
an empty field in the small North-East Fife village
as runners negotiated a 5-mile trail through the
surrounding woodlands. Martin Ryan claimed a top
30 position for the club, finishing in 31mins 38secs,
followed by Stephen Ferguson 33:22; Bill Lawson
36:21; Colin Wilson 36:41; David Norrie 37:25, closely
pursued by Joan Wilson 37:42.
The penultimate round of the East District Cross
Country takes place on Sunday at Kirkcaldy’s
Beveridge Park over a 6.4km course for women and
8.8km for men. Further details may be obtained from
Fiona Angus, and Neil Muir. |

- A day for runners - and the weather - to shine |
Usually associated with atrocious
weather conditions, this year’s Glen Clova
Half Marathon was presented with a rare window of
sunshine as 300 runners contested the 13-mile undulating
course in hot pursuit of Ruairidh Campbell of Arbroath
who emerged a clear winner in 1hr 12min 56secs.
Bob Brown of Perth Road Runners completed the distance
in 1:36:29 as he prepares for next month’s
Luton marathon, while Peter Ritchie produced a slower
than expected time of 1:42:19 followed by Alastair
Bulcraig 1:52:00.
Far away from the chilling winds of Scottish Glens,
Stuart Wyllie enjoyed the autumn sunshine of the
French Riviera, but struggled with injury as he
completed the Monaco Marathon in 4hrs 27min 31secs,
while his wife Jackie fared better in the 10K race,
finishing in 62:26.
As the road racing calendar nears completion, the
cross-country season continues with the second meeting
of the East District league on Sunday 26th November
at Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy. Members wishing to
take part are requested to contact Neil Muir or
Fiona Angus for further details.
Club member Andrea Cameron has again gained international
recognition with her selection for the Scotland
team at the British and Irish Masters Cross Country
Championships this weekend. |

- Trio travel to Dublin |
Following club representation
at several international marathons this year, including
Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Berlin, it was no surprise
to find three members of Perth Road Runners enjoying
the mild autumnal conditions that have become synonymous
with Ireland’s premier road race – the
Dublin Marathon. Bob Brown, Kenneth Stewart and
Karen Walters travelled the short distance to join
5,000 overseas, and 5,500 Irish runners that made
this one of the largest marathons since first staged
in 1980. Despite a buffeting wind during the latter
stages, Kenneth Stewart managed to complete the
hilly course in 3hrs 37mins, followed by Bob Brown
3:55, and Karen Walters 4:42.
Members are reminded that the Templeton 10mile road
race takes place on Sunday starting at 10:30am.
Note: Registration at new venue - Ward Road Gym
(14 Ward Road). |
