January 2016

8th January 2016

A number of Perth Road runners were busy throughout December, completing the Marcathon challenge that requires you to run at least 3 miles each day during the month. Stewart Reid, Stuart Fraser, Sonjia Crow, Richard Ward, Daile Sipple, Barry Campbell, Julie Ramsay and Amy Greig all managed to complete the impressive running streak, giving them a strong base for 2016.

New year’s day saw 13 green vests doing the double parkrun: 5k at Dundee’s Camperdown park followed by 5k at Perth’s North Inch. The aggregate times for those who ran both were: Jimmy Fotheringham 41:00, Kevin Riddell 41:58, Neil Muir 42:52, Stuart Robertson 43:01, Ronnie Glen 43:06, Richard Ward 44:03, Sonjia Crow 44:45, Stephen Ferguson 45:24, Simon Grieshaber 47:07, John Rudd 49:29, Barry Campbell 51:03, David Michael Wood 54:09, Peter Ritchie 59:45 and Fiona Morrison 75:43. Many then went on to complete the triple by completing the Blairgowrie fun run afterwards, covering over 10 miles in total.

Myles Bax and Duncan Ryan competed at the Scottish 3000m indoor championships at the Emirates arena in Glasgow on Sunday 3rd. Myles finished his heat in 9:20. Duncan came first in his heat with 10:22. Great preparation for the Scottish masters indoor champs in a few weeks.

As usual, the regular club night is Tuesday at Bells Sports Centre 6:25pm. All new runners are greeted by a club member who will pair them with someone of similar ability. No new runner is left behind!

With Parkrun cancelled due to the wet and icy conditions, the main road runner action was the Frostbite trail series at Falkland estate on Sunday 10th. Seven hardy souls braved the wet and muddy conditions. Stuart Fraser was first road runner home and fourteenth overall in 30.39. He was followed by Neil Muir 31.11, Stewart Reid 32.53, Richard Hughes 34.57, Gillian Smith 44.31, Caroline Hogarth 47.04 and Eleanor Paul 50.42. A number of club members volunteered at the annual Great Edinburgh cross country championships at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh on Saturday 9th. Pictured are Michael McConnell and club chairman, Neil Muir, with commentator Jonathon Edwards and Jo Pavey.

Earlier that morning Kevin Rogers and Ronnie Glen competed in the Edinburgh Great Winter Run 5K. Kevin Rogers came 50th with a time of 19.31 and Ronnie Glen 72nd in 20.00.

This week four road runners took part in the Buchlyvie 10k race near Stirling. Roy Mitchell was first club member home in 48:06, followed by Gillian Smith 57:09, Caroline Hogarth 61:14 and Eleanor Paul 63:11.

Perth parkrun is still using the alternative route of two laps round North Inch park due to the poor condition of the regular route. Club member Mark Dunn was first across the line in 18:24, ahead of 118 other runners. He was closely followed by Jimmy Fotheringham 18:53 (2nd place) and Kevin Rogers who finished 5th in 19:29. Ten road runners participated, with another four volunteering. The weekly 5k relies on volunteers to ensure it takes place. New helpers are always welcomed!

The Thursday session on February 4th will be the Lark in the Dark, taking place at Five Mile Wood, near Stanley. Head torches will be required for the 6:30 start. Anyone interested in joining the club should meet for the regular Tuesday session at Bells Sports Centre by 6:35pm. First timers are paired with runners of a similar level.
